Politics Has It's Limits!

I am a political person. The role of politics is an important one. However, it has severe limitations, as does government (I'm sure that made my conservative friends happy). Regardless of who becomes President in 2008, real long-term change comes from the bottom up. There's good news and bad news to this reality. The bad news is that placing all of our hopes in a single leader to implement long lasting change in our country and around the world is unrealistic. The good news is that the people at the bottom (you and me), everyday ordinary people can be freed from banking all our national visions on the lesser of two evils. We can make the difference. We can make change--even in the muck and mire of partisan politics. Jim Wallis pinpoints this exciting opportunity in the following article.

And buy his new book, "The Great Awakening." :) (It's the follow-up to God's Politics).

One problem with the Wallis piece: We haven't voted in Florida yet. That doesn't happen until Tuesday and I can't wait till it's done because if Rudy's campaign calls my house one more time, I think I might scream. And that doesn't even include calls from the Romney, McCain, and Huckabee campaigns (and they say Romney's leading here). And let us not forget the pollsters calling. It's bordering on ridiculous. No, scratch that, it passed ridiculous a looong time ago. We are under seige!! The one good thing is that the DNC stopped the Dem's from campaigning her as punishment for our legislature moving up the primaries to January. So no calls, pollsters, or commercials from them.

Wow, that was the only problem you had with it? See... I knew you'd come around. :)

I noticed that fla thing too. I chalked it up to a typo.

The thought of Giuliani or Romney getting the Republican ticket makes my stomach stink. I'm pretty sure I won't vote for eitherof them.

I diagreed with various statements but I'm too busy screening calls to think clearly right now. The phone is ALWAYS ringing.

Ah.. TOO LATE!! You already said that was the only thing! :)

Oh, and actually, while I take a few exceptions with Wallis' political stands, I agree totally with the over all theme of the article. I don't know if you read my MLK post, but he actually echoed a couple of things that I said concerning our corrupt pop culture and its effects on our families and children. Real change cannot be legislated. It really is a matter of personal responsibility.

Yes, I did read the MLK pience. And Wallis, as you will find out in God's politics, strongly promotes personal responsibility because morality cannot be effectively legistlated for the most part, but believes government still has a role to play in seeing that equal access to opportunies for success and self-sufficiency are available. Again, it's both!
